After 5 days he realizes that three-eleventh of the work is over = 5x36 = 180 worker days = 3/11th of work.
So remaining 8/11th of work = 480 worker days. We have 15 days remaining, so 15 days x 'n' workers = 480 worker days. So n=32.
Hence of the 36 workers, 4 of the workers can be fired. Hence C.

One quick way to solve is-

25% days over, work done=27% approximately
==> needs to fire people, A,B,D re out

Now common sense says that out of C and E,C should be right because the gap between work needed to be done and number of days left is not too huge.

if 36 laborers can complete 3/11 of work in in 5 days,
then they can complete 12/11 of the work in 20 days,
for an excess of 1/11
let rate=(3/11)/(5*36)=1/660
let w=number of excess workers
15w/660=1/11
w=4

hello, can you please clarify where you got 480 worker days from, since 15*36 = 540

hello, can you please clarify where you got 480 worker days from, since 15*36 = 540

3/11th of the work = 180 worker days.

Let the work be 'x'

(3/11) (x) = 180

x = 180 x (11/3) = 660

So (8/11) (x) = (8x660) / 11 = 480.

So 8/11th of the work = 480 worker days
