Although, I answered (D), I can now see that the answer is (E).

The subject of the main sentence is "diamond".

--> diamond has a rating of 10
--> diamond is 3 points above quartz
--> diamond is 4 points above steel

IMO too it should be 'D' as it rightly compares the hardness of the materials mentioned.


The correct answer is E as it compares the rating of the hardness of different materials.

Rating could be above or below few points not the hardness. I mean it is wrong to say that the hardness of 3 points above something.

will go with E ..
in D rating is compared with hardness....so not logical ..

B) quartz and about four points more than that of - INCORRECT as points or steel is repeated by mentioning 'that of'
C) how hard quartz is and about four points more than the hardness of - INCORRECT as number compared to quality of hardness
D) the hardness of quartz and about four point more than the hardness of - INCORRECT as number is compared to hardness
E) quartz and about four points above - CORRECT as the comparison is right

I am not clear by studying the above explanations why E is correct.

If we consider rating, then the sentence structure may be...

The rating of a diamond is 10, three points above that of quartz and about four points more than that of steel.

Would anyone explain elaborately why E is correct?

Option-E on expanding becomes - three points above quartz (on Moh's Scale of Hardness) and about four points above steel (on Moh's Scale of Hardness).

Since ''on Moh's Scale of Hardness" is mentioned in the first part of the sentence, it is not necessary to repeat.

IMO
The comparison is among the diamond, quartz, and steel, and not their hardness.

if it were hardness of the diamond the answer would have been D

E is the right answer. When comparing points on a scale ‘above’ is the correct term.

A diamond has a rating of 10 on Moh's Scale of Hardness, three points above quartz and about four points more than the hardness of steel.

This is a tricky question, it makes us think that the point of comparison here is amongst hardness of diamond, quartz and steel but the question is actually comparing the rating.

I arrived at option E picking a clue from the original sentence(highlighted). It is quite clear that the correct option should compare the rating. Three points above X and about 4 points above Y also maintains a parallel structure.

E) quartz and about four points above

Diamond has a rating of 10, quartz has a rating of 7 and steel has a rating of 6.

You can compare their ratings but certainly not their "hardness." What does a hardness of 10 even mean? The hardness is given a rating of 10 on the scale.
In this context, diamond is 3 points above quartz also makes sense because the way we view a scale, we can imagine diamond written next to 10 and quartz written next to 7. So we can say that diamond is 3 points above quartz and four points above steel.

I’ve done these experiments of Mohr and Rockwell hardness in engineering lab. But as per gmat rules I’m finding it exceptional to compare rating with “quartz” or “steel”
