A doctor at the Amsterdam Clinic maintains that if children eat a diet high in vitamins and took vitamin supplements, they will be less likely to catch the common cold.

a) took vitamin supplements, they will be less likely to catch
b) took vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch
c) take vitamin supplements, they were less likely of catching

e) take vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch

I MHO (E), as (E) uses correct subjunctive structure & they clearly refers to children

b) took vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch
c) take vitamin supplements, they were less likely of catching
d) take vitamin supplements, they will be less likely of catching
e) take vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch

First, the sentence requires an “If and then” construction.
Also if we take a closer look at the sentence, if children eat ..... and take (simple present tense is required), hence A and B can be eliminated.

If ( simple present tense) , then (requires simple present or simple future).

So for the second clause, it’s quite evident to go for option E. (are)

b) took vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch
c) take vitamin supplements, they were less likely of catching
d) take vitamin supplements, they will be less likely of catching
e) take vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch

a) took vitamin supplements, they will be less likely to catch
--> took is incorrect and not parallel with 'eat'. Incorrect

b) took vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch
--> took is incorrect and not parallel with 'eat'. Incorrect

c) take vitamin supplements, they were less likely of catching
--> take is correct and parallel with 'eat'. 'Were' is incorrect as the doctor maintains means still valid.

d) take vitamin supplements, they will be less likely of catching
--> take is correct and parallel with 'eat'. The second half is wordy and awkward.

e) take vitamin supplements, they are less likely to catch
--> take is correct and parallel with 'eat'. 'Are less likely' is correct.

Hence E is the correct option.

You can also use simple present tense with both if and then clauses.
