A drug that is highly effective in treating many types of infection can, at present, be obtained only from the bark of the ibora, a tree that is quite rare in the wild. It takes the bark of 5,000 trees to make one kilogram of the drug. It follows, therefore, that continued production of the drug must inevitably lead to the ibora’s extinction.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above?
(A) The drug made from ibora bark is dispensed to doctors from a central authority.
(B) The drug made from ibora bark is expensive to produce.
(C) The leaves of the ibora are used in a number of medical products.
(D) The ibora can be propagated from cuttings and grown under cultivation.
(E) The ibora generally grows in largely inaccessible places.

Torn between D and E.

D.

Provides an alternative for extracting the drug without destroying the existing trees in the wilderness.

I also though it is D , alas answer is E

Only thing I found in support of E is

, a tree that is quite rare in the wild

Any better explanation

This is from SC1000?

E is clearly a mistake....

Bumping this up. Turns out the OA in CR1000 is wrong.

This is in OG 10 - number 68 (thanks to someone on this forum who pointed this out earlier). The OA given in OG 10 is D and I trust the OG more than CR1000. I chose D and could not understand why E was right either.

D is the most relevant. The unstated premise is related to continued production and the tree´s extinction, as D is.

I also frustrated when I saw OA in CR1000. Thanks for finding the answer in OG! D is clear here.

Hmmm.....

I also chose D but E also make sense. If Ibora is not accessible, then it is less likely to be extinct.
But D makes more sense. if it can be cultivated, extinction is too far.

I guess E would have been reasonable if we had added: "The ibora generally grows in largely inaccessible places that will be inaccessible for production for a long time". We need some information about future...

I can't say E is not relevant as one can assume from E that 'inaccessibility of the tree' can negate the 'must inevitable extinction' but E does not provide solution for regrowth and hence the possibility of extinction do exists with E. So, D.

(D) The ibora can be propagated from cuttings and grown under cultivation.-> if ibora can be cultivated then there is always a scope
to prevent its extinction .CORRECT

(E) The ibora generally grows in largely inaccessible places.-> this does not explain if extinction can be avoided
