A. 1/6
B. 1/5
C. 1/4
D. 1/3
E. 1/2

Solution:

We can let the number of locks Harold examines be h and the number of locks Silvia examines be s and create the equation:

0.08h + 0.05s = 0.075(h + s)

0.08h + 0.05s = 0.075h + 0.075s

0.005h = 0.025s

5h = 25s

h = 5s

We need to determine the value of s/(h + s). Since h = 5s, we have:

s/(h + s) = s/(5s + s) = s/(6s) = 1/6

What is the significance of this statement: "All of the locks is examined by both managers."? Isn't it contradictory to the approach taken to solve this problem?
