A family’s monthly budget allocates $3,600 for their home mortgage payment plus food and utilities in the ratio of 5:3:1, respectively. What is the dollar amount allocated for food?

(A) $2,000
(B) $1,600
(C) $1,200
(D) $800
(E) $400

Sum the ratio parts
Find the multiplier, \(x\), and
Apply the multiplier to FOOD

\(M : F : U\)
\(5x: 3x: 1x = 9x\)

\(9x = $3,600\)

\(x=(\frac{$3600}{9})= $400\)

Food = \(3x = (3*$400) = $1,200\)

Total amount : food = (5+3+1):3 = 9:3 = 3:1

Therefore, the amount allocate to food = 3600:3 = 1200 => Answer (C)

We can create the ratio of home mortgage payment : food: utilities = 5x : 3x : x and create the equation:

5x + 3x + x = 3600

9x = 3600

x = 400

Thus, the budgeted amount for food is 3 x 400 = 1200 dollars.
