Oh jeez, this flights overbooked I thought to myself as I strolled through the airport. I'd had a friend in the airline check and I knew they'd booked up 30 over but had some space in business. I stopped at the bathroom and changed into my nicer clothes only because I'd been in these other ones all day and felt kind of icky. Ironic that a more formal suit would feel better, but it did. Then I realized, hey I have upgrades! A quick bump to business class and I board. A distinguished looking gentleman sits down with a briefcase full of nothing but golf magazines and expensive looking car magazines. No rob report, but close.

I have a quick bite when the food comes around and take a nap. When I wake up, he's still reading the same magazine. "You know, I just recently took up golf myself, great sport." I say to him.

He smiles, reaches into his bag and shocks me with a tazer gun. I go screaming down the isle. Just kidding. He nods and we start talking. Somehow, the MBA comes up (I seem to weave this into everything these days. Oh look, it's going to rain today. It's probably raining on the east coast. Harvards on the east coast. !@#! you Harvard).

"Oh yea, where you applying?" he asks
"Chicago and Kellogg, a few others."
"Great schools. Tell me, do you prefer the case study method or a more quantatative lecture based approach?"

I blink. Huh? Thats a bit specific...

"Sounds like you know something about the MBA..."
"I'm on the board of trustees at XXXX"

And so begins a two and half hour long conversation about MBA programs, my career path, my goals, my interests, my thoughts, my plans, etc. I got free interview practice!!!

And no, unfortunately he was not from any of the schools I was applying to, but I thought it interesting nonetheless.

Alternate interesting story:

One of the people I fly with has a name that happens to be a no fly list. He can still fly, but he always has to check in at the counter and they call some number and verify a bunch of stuff. Well, as it turns out, the online check in system this particular airline uses doesn't integrate with that no fly list, and he's able to check in and board if he just checks in online. Now THATS security.

I had a similar experience on a flight last weekend. I was flying to Dallas and the guy next to me was a Harvard MBA. We talked about his experience and my career goals etc. Turned into a long 2 hour conversation that was excellent practice for my Wharton interview today.

It made the hour and a half long interview seem like a breeze. I like my chances at Wharton now...

The same standard ones. We were done with the interview in 30 minutes. The next hour we spent chatting about our experiences.

1) Walk me through your resume
2) Why MBA? Why now? Why Wharton?
3) Follow up questions related to Why Wharton?
4) What countries have you travelled to?
5) What are your values? What do you represent?
6) How are you involved with the community?
