Since the question mentions "one-fourth", pick a number that's divisible by 4 e.g x=16

A 2/3 (16+3) = 2/3 (19) = that's not even an integer, since 19 is not divisible by 3.
B (3/4)(16+4) = (3/4) (20) = reduce the 20 with the 4 to get 3⋅5/1 = 15. That matches your goal, but you still need to check all 5.
C 3 (4⋅16+4) = Take 16 and multiply it times 4? already way greater than 15.
D 3 (16+4) = Again, much too big to equal 15.
E (3⋅16+4) = way too big.

C. 3(4x+4)

E. 4(3x+4)

This is how I tried.

let x be the number of people, given 1/4(x) are in air ( they are saints ) 3/4(x) are on the ground ( normal people)

Lets take the number which is divisble by 4... let is be 20.

Now 1/4(x) = 1/4(20 ) = 5 in air and 3/4(20) = 15 and three members are on ground now ... Total 18 are on ground.

Sub the number x = 20 in option only B suits this i.e. 3/4(24) = 18.

IMO option B.

Let me know if I am missing anything.

one fourth rise up in the air => three fourth are on the ground.
Of those who rise up, 3 return back down.
Total on the ground is
$$\frac{3x}{4}$$ + 3
= $$\frac{3}{4}$$$$(x+4)$$

Should be B?

Remaining would be 3/4 x + 3

Yes it would be option B.
Just take 3/4 common and the expression becomes the same as mentioned in option B i.e. 3/4(x+4)

Bunuel , I am laughing too hard to begin to attempt to answer this question. Kudos and thanks for levity. Your and others' questions often contain enjoyable snark or creative wit. This one blew the top off my merriment chart. *gasp*

as 1/4 people are up in the air 3/4*x are remaining on the ground plus the 3 people that came down later

total = 3*x/4 + 3 => 3/4(x+4)

E. 4(3x+4)

One-fourth of the people rise up in the air
If 1/4 of the x people are in the AIR, the remaining 3/4 of the x people are on the GROUND
So, (3/4)x = number of people on the GROUND

After a while, 3 of them come back down.
So, the number of people on the GROUND is increased by 3

So, now (3/4)x + 3 = number of people on the GROUND

Check the answer choices . . . not there!
Or so it seems.

If we take answer choice B, (3/4)(x+4), and expand it, we get: (3/4)x + 3
PERFECT!

Cheers,
Brent

A. 2/3*(x+3)
B. (3/4)(x+4)
C. 3(4x+4)
D. 3(x+4)
E. 4(3x+4)

Let x = 12

Now 1/4 of the people rise up in the air, will be 3,

9 on ground after that 3 came down, this makes the total as 12

Only B gives the value of 12 when we substitute back for x

12
