I think there is a typo here. If for the second time, hiker traveled south then he will be traveling back in the same direction in which he traveled 5 miles at the start. I think for the second time he should have traveled 24 miles west and then 5 miles again east. The path looks like the below diagram.

Using pyth theorem, I get C too, with two sides of the two triangles formed being 13 each. However, I have a question: How do I know the diagonal cuts the 24 exactly into half? is this a property? I got the amswer cuz I couldn't think of another possible way to solve this

When both the legs are of equal length, the line touching the end points of the bases has to cross 24 inch path exactly half way. Its just intuitive, nothing as theorem or concept.

In total, the hiker traveled due east for 5 + 5 = 10 miles and due south for 24 miles. By the Pythagorean theorem, the straight-line distance from her tent to the hut is √(10^2 + 24^2) = √676 = 26 miles.

Answer: C
