A lawyer who does not return phone calls from her clients cannot be a skillful, experienced lawyer. I feel comfortable with the skill and experience of my attorney because she returns all of my phone calls, even when she is busy.

Which of the following selections presents a reasoning pattern most similar to the flawed pattern presented in the passage?

(A) Anyone who plays on a baseball team has had to make sacrifices for the good of the team. Ted is used to making sacrifices, so he might play on a baseball team.

(B) Anyone who is opposed to the city bond issue has not received the city’s information packet on the issue. Sandy says she will vote against the city bond issue, so she hasn’t received the city information packet.

(C) No one who likes science fiction movies will miss seeing the second release of the Star Wars trilogy in movie theaters. Jimmy loves the Star Wars movies, but he did not see the second movie of the trilogy when it was released recently.

(D) A school-age child who spends three afternoons a week at gymnastics practice does not have a proper balance between school work and gymnastics. Tom spends only one afternoon per week at gymnastics practice, so he has a proper balance between school and gymnastics.

(E) A person who is jumpy and impatient will not work well with animals. Janice is impatient, so she would not be a good animal trainer.

if X (Lawyer who does not return phone calls from her clients) then Y (cannot be a skillful, experienced lawyer).
!x --> !y
(this is not as per the usual negation (!y-->!x) but merely represents the faulty logic only for this question )

Based on the logical structure of the above argument ,Now try to find the same in the options.
You will see Only D matches.

(E) A person who is jumpy and impatient will not work well with animals. Janice is impatient, so she would not be a good animal trainer.
E requires the person to be both jumpy and impatient. While in the second part it only talks about Janice being Impatient . So IMO, D is a better choice.

Here is my reasoning, though a lengthy process. Hope it helps someone around here.

Argument:

Not return of phone calls ---> Not skill
Return of phone calls ---> Skill

So, there is a negative relationship

A.
Plays on a baseball team ---> make sacrifices
Plays on a baseball team <--- make sacrifices

No negative relationship

B.
Not received the city’s information packet --->Opposed the city bond
Opposed the city bond ----> Not received the city’s information packet

No negative relationship

C.
Likes science fiction movies ---> Seeing the second release of the Star Wars trilogy in movie theaters
Loves the Star Wars movies ---> Not see the second movie of the trilogy when it was released recently

No negative relationship

D.
Spending three afternoons a week ---> Not have a proper balance
Not spends three afternoons a week ---> Have a proper balance

Bingo! there is a negative relationship.

E.
Jumpy and impatient ---> Not work well with animals
Impatient ---> Not a good animal trainer

No negative relationship

So, answer is D.

A very good question.

IDEA: Define. Implement

I could clearly strike out A and C because they were completely out of line.

Between B, D, and E, I striked out B and E because they talk about expectation/ something that "MIGHT" happen in the future. The argument is in simple present, so all the statements should be facts, and not possibilities.

Hope this helps. :)
