I would agree with C. Correct use is was rather than were.

If I change "were" to "was" in A . which one is better (A or C)?

A) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published,
(C) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published,

IMO its C

Suresh,

If we replace was with were i will still go with C. Because in that case also A will mean as if the letter was published as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published (i.e. both were published together).

guys - thought that gmat prefers active voice...in that case refering to the "by mark twain part" D and E would be left. can someone tell me why this rule does not apply to this sentence?

many thanks

D & E are clearly wrong because they change the meaning. Both sound as if the TAOHBF reveal what MT did and not the letter.

A & B are wrong because of "were" and "publication as"
