(A) the percentage of thundershowers in Plainville that occur in the spring
(B) the percentage of spring rainfalls in Plainville that are thundershowers
(C) the percentage of thundershowers in Plainville that result from low-pressure systems
(D) whether low-pressure systems in other areas are associated with rainfall
(E) whether Plainville has more or fewer thundershowers each spring than do nearby towns

The question asks what's the probability that a Plainville will have a thunder shower soon. You know that low-pressure weather system is approaching Plainville and rainfall results from about 70 percent of such systems in the Plainville area. You also know that it's spring time and thunderstorms are most likely to occur during spring. If you know the probability of thunderstorms during spring you and when a low front is moving towards it then the probability of thunder showers = .70*probability of thundershows during spring.

1. thundershowers are approaching
2. 70% of rainfall is because of low-pressure system
3. In spring there are thundershowers.

Combine 1,2 & 3 and you will reach the conclusion.

i can tell you why its not A, choice A is already repeated from the passage, so repeating what the passage already stated wouldn't be the most useful in this case...?

IMO B......

A is not good as we are not sure that low pressure helps thundershower or not?

From the argument we know the following:

1) 70% of low-pressure systems (LPS) result in rain.
2) Thunderstorms sometimes result from LPS.
3) Spring is the most common time for thunderstorms.

We need an answer that will best help us determine whether this LPS will result in a thunderstorm.

The information we don't have is what percent of time that it is raining is it a thunderstorm. This piece of information will help us determine how likely it is for a thunderstorm appear. After all, if it is LPS with rain, but when it rains there is only a 1% chance that it will thunderstorm, this is very different than if there is a 90% of a thunderstorm every time it rains. (B) provides this information.

(A) wouldn't help us, because even if most thunderstorms occurred in Spring that wouldn't tell us how likely this system will bring a thunderstorm. Indeed all of the other seasons could not have any thunderstorms. If spring only has one thunderstorm per year (making it the season with the most thunderstorms) this is not going to tell us much.

We are assuming thundershowers to be a type of rainfall.

This was my mistake as well. I thought that rainfalls are irrelevant, as thundershowers result from LPS.

Anyway, now I understand it.

Premises:
1) LPS is approaching
2) 70% of LPS results in rainfall
3) Thundershowers sometimes result from LPS
4) Thundershowers are most likely to occur in spring
5) This is spring season

To determine the probability of having a thundershower soon, we need to know either percentage of LPS results in thundershowers or percentage of spring rainfalls that are thundershowers (we already know that 70% of LPS results in rainfall).

This makes option B correct.
