A manufacturer of large truck engines recently developed a new engine with increased horsepower as compared to the earlier engine put out by the company. During the last year, when both engines were sold, the earlier engine outsold the new model by a factor of two to one. The management of the truck engine manufacturer concluded that the company's customers do not care about increased horsepower.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion reached by the management of the truck engine manufacturer?

a) Many types of customers buy this company's truck engines, including private truck enthusiasts and commercial truck companies.
b) A number of horsepower-increasing accessories for the earlier engine sold well during the last year and these products are not yet available for the new engine.
c) Many customers of this truck engine manufacturer also purchase truck engines from companies that did not come out with a new, higher horsepower engine in the last year.
d) The newer engine can be used in all the same trucks as the earlier engine.
e) There was not a significant difference in price between the new engine and the earlier version of the engine put out by this manufacturer.

Imo B
A is irrelevant
B is correct if those asssessories are still in market and they can increase the house power of the earlier engine then people would not buy the latest engine as they can increase the house power of the engine by using those asssessories as they will be cheaper than the new engine .

We are told to weaken. So we need to find an alternate reason due to which the new engine didn't had very good sales.

a) Many types of customers buy this company's truck engines, including private truck enthusiasts and commercial truck companies. - then what ? anyone can buy ! why do we care? irrelevant!
b) A number of horsepower-increasing accessories for the earlier engine sold well during the last year and these products are not yet available for the new engine. - Well, this could be the reason that although new engine has higher hp but doesn't have it's supported accessories available in the market. let's block this option!
c) Many customers of this truck engine manufacturer also purchase truck engines from companies that did not come out with a new, higher horsepower engine in the last year. - Again an irrelevant option , which doesn't revolves around the conclusion at all.
d) The newer engine can be used in all the same trucks as the earlier engine. - Good! we aren't weakening it by this ! this should have led to more sales?
e) There was not a significant difference in price between the new engine and the earlier version of the engine put out by this manufacturer. - Similar to choice D , it doesn't explain the decrease in sales of new engine.

Thus we will go with the answer B
