Is this because the worms can not themselves be a species but can come from a species.
Which leaves C and E

But C repeats the reference to the worms already made by "ones"
therefore E
?

Is the question to be decided based upon the idiomatic usage i.e. "believe to be"

specimens are themselves not the species ; specimens are "of a species" .

Hence E wins.
