A merchant discounted the sale price of a coat and the sale price of a sweater. Which of the two articles of clothing was discounted by the greater dollar amount?
(1) The percent discount on the coat was 2 percentage points greater than the percent discount on the sweater.
(2) Before the discounts, the sale price of the coat was $10 less than the sale price of the sweater.

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

E.

Consider the price of sweater be x. And let the discount on sweater be p percent.

From 1: Discount on coat will be p+2 percent. Unless we know price of sweater and/or coat, we cannot not decide the discount. Not sufficient.
From 2: Price of coat = x-10 which not of much help. Not sufficient.

From 1&2: Discounted amount for sweater = p*x
Discounted amount for coat = (p+2)(x-10) = px + 2x - 10p - 20. To decide which discounted price is greater, the expression (2x -10p -20) needs to be evaluated, which cannot be done with given info.

Re: A merchant discounted the sale price of a coat and the sale price of [#permalink]
Ok selling price of coat is A
Selling price is sweater is B
Discount % on coat is x
Discount % on sweater is y

Now x + 2 = y
And A = B - 10

Dollar amount discount on coat
A - x/100 *A
(B-10) - (y-2)/100* (B-10)

Dollar amount discount on sweater
B - y/100*B

So looking at this shouldn't C be right answer?? What did I miss?
