Not modifies the verb: not THIS VERB but THAT VERB.
For example:
Not PRODUCED by seed companies but CONSUMED by seed companies.
Not PRODUCED by seed companies but OFFERED by seed companies.
Since the SC above is not comparing one action of seed companies to another action of seed companies, the placement of not before PRODUCED is incorrect.
Eliminate D and E.

Produced not BY SEED COMPANIES.
Not modifies the prepositional phrase: produced not BY THIS but BY THAT.

C is concise and maintains the parallelism by using - "not by" "but by"

D comes close, but "not produced by" and "but produced by" is not parallel

I rejected A, B and E on the grounds that "the case with most genetically modified...." is awkward.

Could eliminate D and E ,as "not produced"...would lead to "profit-minded companies still being responsible although they might not have produced them ( probably they acquired them ).

But well, from allthose explanations I cannot see the difference between В and C. I'm not a native speaker, so there's no difference for me between "not produced by" and "produced not by"

Can anyone explain the difference more clearly? I would appreciate...

You need paralellism

Not by.... but by

B is missing a by after but.

Usually, you have to put the verb out and make the comparison by the predicate of the verb.

THe option C maintains the parellelism perfectly and is concise and gives the intended meaning.

Here which modifies a clause(action) of produced by X company >> wrong. "Which is a noun modifier and hence is incorrectly used to modify action.

"as was the case with X" is an idiom we should remember . it is used to show that the two action is in the same way

if we apply this phrase in choice C, "as was the case..." must modify the whole preceding clause. the result is a no sense meaning.

This question is based on Parallelism and Modifiers.

The correlative conjunctions ‘not-but’ indicate the need to maintain parallelism in the sentence. To maintain parallelism, each of the pair of correlative conjunctions must be followed by a word of the same part of speech.

Why are most of the high level GMAT Prep questions ranked SUB 500? I mean, I am so sure this question is not a sub 500 level question but for some reason, most of the high level questions from GMAT prep are sub categorised under Sub 500 level. Is there any reason for it?
Can anyone shed some light on the same?
