Where a modifier is placed changes the meaning.

In D and E:
Not PRODUCED by seed companies.
Not modifies the verb: not THIS VERB but THAT VERB.
For example:
Not PRODUCED by seed companies but CONSUMED by seed companies.
Not PRODUCED by seed companies but OFFERED by seed companies.
Since the SC above is not comparing one action of seed companies to another action of seed companies, the placement of not before PRODUCED is incorrect.
Eliminate D and E.

Produced not BY SEED COMPANIES.
Not modifies the prepositional phrase: produced not BY THIS but BY THAT.
Produced not BY SEED COMPANIES but BY RESEARCHERS.
This is the intended meaning of the SC above.

In A, not by seed companies...but university and United States Department of Agriculture researchers lacks parallelism. Eliminate A.

In B, not by profit-motivated seed companies...but university and United States Department of Agriculture researchers lacks parallelism. Eliminate B.

Only C offers the correct -- and parallel -- comparison:

...produced not by profit-motivated seed companies...but by university and United States Department of Agriculture researchers...

" As was the case wirth ...."This is just an inverted clause. The subject is 'the case' and the verb 'was'

My answer is C. Nice question BTW.

C is concise and maintains the parallelism by using - "not by" "but by"

D comes close, but "not produced by" and "but produced by" is not parallel

I rejected A, B and E on the grounds that "the case with most genetically modified...." is awkward.

Barely managed to pick C.

Could eliminate D and E ,as "not produced"...would lead to "profit-minded companies still being responsible although they might not have produced them ( probably they acquired them ).

C

A and B - No. Lacks Parallel structure. Should be "but by"
C - Keep. Not happy with "profit-motivated". It should parallel "who allowed growers to use it free of charge".
D - No. Wordy.
E - No. "the case with most genetcally modified crops..." wrongly modifies the "the papaya was not produced by seed companies"

You are right, OA is C.
But well, from allthose explanations I cannot see the difference between В and C. I'm not a native speaker, so there's no difference for me between "not produced by" and "produced not by"

Can anyone explain the difference more clearly? I would appreciate...

You need paralellism

Not by.... but by

B is missing a by after but.

Usually, you have to put the verb out and make the comparison by the predicate of the verb.

Hope it helps.

THe option C maintains the parellelism perfectly and is concise and gives the intended meaning.

Between C and D

D - "which was the case with most genetically modified crops"

Here which modifies a clause(action) of produced by X company >> wrong. "Which is a noun modifier and hence is incorrectly used to modify action.

C is correct as the sentence structure tries to put up a comparison with the help of the comparison marker "as"

"as was the case with X" is an idiom we should remember . it is used to show that the two action is in the same way

as was the case with you, I passed gmat

if we apply this phrase in choice C, "as was the case..." must modify the whole preceding clause. the result is a no sense meaning.

choice C is terribly wrong

of course, I choose C
