A newly developed light bulb is much more cost-effective than conventional light bulbs: it costs only about 3 times what a conventional light bulb costs but it lasts up to 10 times as long as a conventional light bulb. Despite the manufacturer’s intense efforts to publicize the advantages of the bulb, one analyst predicts that these new bulbs will prove to sell very poorly.

Each of the following, if true, provides support for the analyst’s prediction EXCEPT:

A. The light generated by the new bulb is in the yellow range of the spectrum, a type of artificial light most people find unappealing.
B. Most people who purchase light bulbs prefer to buy inexpensive light bulbs rather than more durable but expensive light bulbs.
C. A manufacturer of one brand of conventional light bulb has advertised claims that the new light bulb uses more electricity than do conventional light bulbs.
D. The new bulb is to be marketed in several different quantities, ranging from packages containing one bulb to packages containing four bulbs.
E. A competing manufacturer is about to introduce a light bulb that lasts 10 times as long as a conventional bulb but costs less than a convenient bulb.

+1 for D

A - Incorrect. If the light generated in unappealing to the public then definitely they'll not buy the new bulb. This supports the analyst's prediction
B - Incorrect. If people prefer cheaper bulbs then the new bulb is not for them as it costs 3 times more than conventional bulb, thus people will buy conventional bulb rather than new bulb. This supports the analyst's prediction
C - Incorrect. More electricity is bad as it'll raise the bills. This supports the analyst's prediction
D - Correct. The number of quantities the new bulb needs to be marketed is irrelevant to Analysts argument.
E - If a competitor is going to manufacture a similar bulb with less price then definitely people will opt the bulb manufactured by competitor. This supports the analyst's prediction

Each of the following, if true, provides support for the analyst’s prediction EXCEPT:// We need to select the option which do not strengthen the argument; it can weaken, produce no effect(neutral).

A. The light generated by the new bulb is in the yellow range of the spectrum, a type of artificial light most people find unappealing.//Wrong: This option strengthen the argument that people will not buy new bulb because of its light//

B. Most people who purchase light bulbs prefer to buy inexpensive light bulbs rather than more durable but expensive light bulbs.// Wrong: Same as A because this option states that people prefer inexpensive light bulbs so even if expensive bulb are more durable, it will not motivate people to prefer that durability to price//

C. A manufacturer of one brand of conventional light bulb has advertised claims that the new light bulb uses more electricity than do conventional light bulbs.// Wrong: This states that some negative image has been made about this new bulb so people will not go for it//

D. The new bulb is to be marketed in several different quantities, ranging from packages containing one bulb to packages containing four bulbs.// Correct: This doesn't affect the argument at all //

E. A competing manufacturer is about to introduce a light bulb that lasts 10 times as long as a conventional bulb but costs less than a convenient bulb.// Wrong: If you have more competitors with good and updated version of product then probability of reduced sale is more//

Hope this helps ...

It should be D. Does not look like a LSAT level Question. Usually they are very tough.

Although the question is not that hard it is an LSAT question. To be precise it is question 5 from the section 4 of the October 1996 Prep test! ;)
