Remaning days =6. So 6$ on the remaining days and 1$ on Sunday.
Assume he buys x papers on rest of days of week, then he buys 2x papers on sunday.
Given:
6x+2x*4=420
14x=420
x=30

Number of paper bought on monday = x
# of paper bought on sunday = 2x

Total cost = 420 = 6*x(rest of the day cost)+8*x (sunday cost)
14x = 420
x = 30

Answer = B. 30

..................... Sunday .................... Monday... Saturday

Price ................... 4 .......................... 1 each

Quantity .............. 2a ........................... a each ("a" assumed)

Setting up the equation

8a + 6a = 420

a = 30

If x is #newspapers on Monday, total cost per week = 6*x + 4*2*x = 14*x
So 14*x = 420. x = 30.

Hi

If a hotel orders twice as many papers on Sunday as it does the rest of the days
of the week
I thought it as number of papers on sunday=x --> number of papers on other days =2x
But it is other way round :(
I often get this kind of equations wrong.
can anyone please explain ...how to remember , any tip?

Thanks

OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

(B) Let x be the number of papers bought each day from Monday to Saturday and 2x be the number of papers bought on Sunday. The cost for the hotel for the week in dollars is = 6x(1) + 2x(4) = (6x + 8x) = 14x = 420. Solving for x, x = 30. Thus the hotel buys 30 newspapers on Monday.
