Answer is D

Total cost of 100 units =117.5
17% of the 100 units are rotten so there is 83 units left to sell.
We know profit = no.of units *SP-TC
Therefore the least selling price to earn $90 profit,
=83*2.5-117.5
=90

Answer is D

A pack of fruits has 100 units and its total cost is $117.5. If 17% of fruits in a pack are rotten, at least what is the unit selling price to earn a total profit of $90?


17% of fruits in a pack are rotten.
So, sellable fruits : 83/100

To make $90 profit : Total SP = 117.5 + 90 = 207.5

Least unit selling price = 207.5/83 = 2.37

So, Ans should be (C)

To earn $90, store needs to sell all of the remaining fruits for 208 (add 90 to 108) approximately. If 208 gets divided by remaining 83 pieces of fruits, D will be answer

Out of 100, 17 are rotten. Only 83 can be sold.
Revenue-Expense=Profit
R-117.5=90
R=90+117.5
R=207.5 needs to be received for 83 units of fruits
price per unit:
207.5=83 units
x=1 unit
207.5*1/83=x
2.5=x, D matches

Let SP of each unit be y.

Since, 17% units are rotten. So, 83 units must be sold and the final SP should be $207.50 in order to earn $90 profit.

83 y = 207.50
y = 2.5

So, the answer is (D)

total cost of the remaining 83 units=117.5
If there is a profit of 90 then the total selling price=117.5+90=207.5
now the unit selling price=207.5/83=2.5
So correct option is D

Total no. of fruits in a pack = 100
17% of them are rotten.
So, no. of good (sellable) fruits = 100-(17%x100) = 83

CP of 83 fruits (sellable) = 117.5

Profit for the 83 fruits \(\geq{90}\)
SP of the 83 fruits \(\geq{207.5}\) (SP=CP+Profit=117.5+90)

Minimum SP of the 83 fruits so that profit of $90 can be made = 207.5

Hence, minimum SP of each fruit = 207.5/83 = 2.5

Option (D)

A pack of fruits has 100 units and its total cost is $117.5. If 17% of fruits in a pack are rotten, at least what is the unit selling price to earn a total profit of $90?

Out of 100 units, 17 units cannot be sold.
According to the question, Total cost($117,5) and Total profit($90) must be earned by selling the 83 units.

Let's say that the unit selling price is X:
83X=117.5+90
83X=207,5
X=2075/(83*10)=25/10=2.5
For making the $90 profit, the unit selling price at least should be 2.5$
The answer choice is D.

IMO D

We have 100 units of a fruit in which 17 are rotten. Therefore, good fruits are \(100 - 17 = 83\)
We are asked to find the price P of each good fruit to get a profit of $90.

\(83 * P = 117.5 + 90\)
\(P = \frac{207.5}{83}\)
\(P = 2.5\)

--> Only 83 fruits can be sold

Let the selling price of each fruit = x
--> SP of 83 fruits = 83x

Total profit = 90
--> 83x - 117.5 = 90
--> 83x = 207.5
--> x = 2.5 $

IMO Option D

I CAN'T BELIEVE I TRIED TO DO MENTAL CALCULATION HERE AND GOT THIS WRONG!!
