First Way
Charge = 5+ (3*5) + (4*4) = 36

Second way = 20
Savings possible = 36-20 = 16$

Total hours Kevin charged for : 12 hrs

Way - 1 charges are as follow for 12 hrs:

First 3 hrs = $ 5.00 -----(I)

For next 5 hrs (4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th) = $3 per hour

means $3 * 5 = $ 15.00 -----(II)

For next 4 hrs (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th) = $4 per hour

means $4 * 4 = $ 16 -----(III)

Add I, II, III

5 + 15 + 16 = 36

Way - 2 charges for 12 hours = $20

Possible saving for Kevin = 36 - 20 = $16

Hence (D)

If Kevin was charged the first way for 12 hours of parking, he was charged:

5 + 5(3) + 4(4) = 5 + 15 + 16 = 36 dollars

So he would have saved 36 - 20 = 16 dollars.

Answer: D
