A private bus company gained greater profits and provided bus service to the area at lower fares by running buses more frequently and stimulating greater ridership. Hoping to continue these financial trends, the company plans to replace all older buses with new, larger buses, including some double-decker buses.

The plan of the bus company as described above assumes all of the following EXCEPT

(A) the demand for bus service in the company’s area of service will increase in the future
(B) increased efficiency and revenues will compensate for any new expenses the company incurs
(C) the new buses will be sufficiently reliable to ensure the company a net financial gain once they are in place
(D) driving the new buses will be no more difficult than driving the buses they are to replace
(E) the larger, double-decker buses will not face obstacles such as height and weight restrictions in the bus company’s area of service

(A) the demand for bus service in the company’s area of service will increase in the future --> if not, the company will not gain expected profit
(B) increased efficiency and revenues will compensate for any new expenses the company incurs --> if not, the company must stand a negative business outcome
(C) the new buses will be sufficiently reliable to ensure the company a net financial gain once they are in place --> if not, the company can't be sure about its future positive outcome
(D) driving the new buses will be no more difficult than driving the buses they are to replace --> if not, it is still too far to conclude that the company can't have expected profit. So, it's the best
(E) the larger, double-decker buses will not face obstacles such as height and weight restrictions in the bus company’s area of service --> if not, the company can't run its plan as initially thought and, thereby can't achieve expected profit

Both D and E seem to be very close, however I think the answer should be D because E specifically refers only to double-decker buses..

I selected E, but D is better.
If you negate the premise in D i.e. the new buses are more difficult to drive than the existing buses are, then the company can still go ahead with the plans.

IMO D....dont know....but I thought driving is not a major issue....
means...when we purchase something...driving is understood.....
cannot explain exactly, but if u observe the options....D comes out alone....

Hi,

Also in Assumption questions with Except what should be the correct answer ? Would that be the one which is irrelevant?

I am confused in except questions particularly Assumption

Thanks

My choice is E.

My approach would be to see how many if weakened would destroy the argument. Only E doen't destroy the argument.

a.the demand for bus service in the company's area of service will increase in the future.
(Obviously, that's they hoped the financial trends would continue)
b.increased efficiency and revenues will compensate for any new expenses the company incurs. If the new revs and efficiency dont compensate then the plan won't work.
c.the new buses will be sufficiently reliable to ensure the company a net financial gain once they are in place.
If the new buses are not reliable, then passengers won't ride them anymore and plan won't work. )
d.driving the new buses will be no more difficult than driving the buses they are to replace. (If new buses are more difficult then the drivers perhaps would take longer times and passengers could get frustrated. So this is not an option because plan won't work.)
e.the larger, double decker buses will not face obstacles such as height and weight restrictions in the bus company's area of service. CORRECT. Well this height issue is a totally new topic not mentioned, so there is no way to judge if this is an assumption at all??

Guys OA pls

Mine is E
I find E irrelevant as service of double Decker buses should not be addressed for profit more over conclusion is saying SOME double Decker buses

I choose C

A bus company needs to have reliability to avoid expenses on maintainence. If maintainence costs increase profitability & service issues will arise causing the venture to have losses

Someone please provide OA with explanation

IMO a,

Even if the demand doesnt increase that if 100 is required and is going to remain 100, doesnt raise to 1000 or something then also the companies plan is going to stand. They are just replacing the service nothing else, even if there are still 100 buses then also they are quite comfortable.

If the number of bus required goes down to 50 then due to increased capacity may be there revenue increases and hence there isnt any negative affect on the plan. So A stands...!!!

+1 D

It doesn't matter whether it is more difficult to drive the new ones. We cannot assume that a driver for a new bus is more expensive.

D it is.Since the question specifically says company is buying DD buses, they must have planned about it.So,E is wrong.
