Between E and C ...

hmm .. I will pick C

I think the term "building" is essential here.

I pick E.

Was deciding between C and E. But C has a weird construction with "is owned by". If i remove the stuff in the middle, the sentence would read "a building... is owned by an individual or individuals" which doesn't make sense.

i would go with E,

A seems to have a modifer problem.... "individuals do not have fewer than eight units "

But I guess I am wrong.....why is E wrong?

my pick was C..

OA is A? really? shd not be, as 'having less than eight..' clause is not clear whether it refers to invidicual or building..

yeah, A makes it sound as though the individuals have 8 or less units.

A seems wrong. It sounds like the individuals have less than 8 units. IMO, E is best.

E is cleaner but did not like the use of word ‘one’ in it.
Need building so left with A & C.
‘Less than 8 units’ is wrong.

C) seems to be the best answer available though E) is also free of errors but less clear compared to C).

A private house in New York City is a building owned by an individual or individuals having less than eight units and no commercial space.

(A) a building owned by an individual or individuals having less than eight units and no commercial space

(B) one that an individual or individuals own with fewer than eight units and no commercial space

A and B are wrong because '... units and commercial space' should be placed near the building. Otherwise, such as in A and B, the units and space appear to modify individuals.

(C) a building with fewer than eight units, no commercial space, and is owned by an individual or individuals

(D) one that has fewer than eight units, no commercial space and it is owned by an individual or individuals

one is already the subject. so 'it' is redundant here.

(E) one that has fewer than eight units, is owned by an individual or individuals, and has no commercial space

units and space modify the 'one' and have similar meaning. should not separate them.

So, yes C.

hello everyone, i am new here, but i would like to say that after a long check i realized why it is A.

If you all notice that both C and E sounds excellent, yet gramatically they are wrong. One can't say AND IS OWNED, you must say AND IT IS OWNED.......

In the option A there seems to be no mistake, therefore it must be A

If iam not sidetracking...here's a correction in the previous post
C and E sound excellent.

Coming to question we have...
Well, as somebody said previously 'Building' is a important constituent. Also the way C preasents facts X, Y and Z is good. So C sounded good to me.

I actually came up with A on this one....

the beginning of the underlined piece must state that it is "a building" not "one" - "one" just does not work.

So you are left with A and C....C changes the sentence but doesnt add anything and changes the order slightly which could affect the meaning. A is the only choice left - in this case not the best but the best of whats available, as is the case with so many GMAT questions.
