Re: A researcher discovered that people who have low levels of immune-syst [#permalink]
Conc: The researcher concluded from this experiment that the immune system protects against mental illness as well as against physical disease.

(A) High immune-system activity protects against mental illness better than normal immune-system activity does -  Though this sounds in line with the passage at a quick glance. The passage indicates comparison between people with low and normal or high level immune-system activity. We don't know if there's a distinction between people with normal and high level immune activity. It could be the case that the score difference tapers off significantly when going from normal to higher than from low to normal. Since this is not a necessary assumption. Drop

(B) Mental illness is similar to physical disease in its effects on body systems - This could possibly be the case why the researchers might have concluded the above. But could it? Just negating the statement, i.e. Mental illness is not similar to physical disease in its effect on the body systems, doesn't seem to impact the reasoning in the passage. This option has no impact. Drop

(C) People with high immune-system activity cannot develop mental illness - No such claims are made in the passage. Neither can this be extrapolated from what's given. Drop

(D) Mental illness does not cause people’s immune-system activity to decrease. - This sounds a bit simple. What's the logical implication? Let's negate to check - "Mental illness does cause people's immune-system activity to decrease." Contrasting the negation with conclusion - "Immune-system can prevent mental health diseases." - we can see that the conclusion breaks, because it isn't physically possible for your immune-system to prevent a disease and getting affected by it at the same time. Looks like a solid choice. Keep

(E) Psychological treatment of mental illness is not as effective as is medical treatment. - This is completely irrelevant to the argument. We're focused on the immune system and not different forms of treatment. Drop
