A scientist planted two groups of plants under identical conditions of light, temperature, humidity, and moisture. Every day he would play sound effects of thunderstorms to one of the groups of plants and sounds of city traffic for the other. The group to which he played thunderstorms all died within a few weeks, but the other group thrived during the experiment. He therefore concluded that the sound of city traffic is more effective for helping plants grow than is the sound of thunderstorms.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the scientist’s conclusion?


(A) The scientist put different varieties of plants in each group.

Although I marked incorrect answer but now i have realized that since he put different varieties of the plants, it may be the case that the one where plants donot die was having a better variety of plants. Hence, a weaker to Scientist conclusion.

Why not C is the correct option? I did not understand the answer please help me with this question.

Hey kanthaliya ,

I am happy to help. :-)

You need to understand that whenever we weaken something, we should NOT attack the premise. Premises are considered a source of truth and they should NEVER be broken.

Now, in the argument we have been told that the plants didn't die due to traffic sound. And then the conclusion was made. I cannot say plants died after several weeks. Since it has been told me that they didn't die, I have to consider that the truth. This is what option C is doing. It is trying to break the premise.

Does that make sense?

I think E is in a way strengthening the Argument.

E is stating that The other group requires more water, Ok but who cares!.It is giving us reason that inspite of the lack of water they survived.

A on the other hand weakens the Argument considerably.

(A) The scientist put different varieties of plants in each group. - doesn't sound that good. Let's move on and see if there is a better answer.

(B) The light affecting the plants changed according to the time of day. - so what ?? For which plant and which not. Not specific. Eliminate.

(C) The plants in the group for which he played city traffic sounds died several weeks after the experiment. - so what ?? Did it for before the previous one. If so, it goes against the premise. We can't assume anything like this.

(D) The plants were all purchased at the same time. - strengthens. Eliminate.

(E) The plants in the group for which he played city traffic sounds required more water than the scientist actually gave them. - ok. But this does not give us any information about the plant for which thunder was played.

By POE, A is best then.

Hey. I don't think we are attacking the premise by choosing C. The premise says that the plants thrived during the experiment. It doesn't say that they continued to thrive post the experiment. Option C talks about the period several weeks after the experiment.

Please let me know if my logic is incorrect.
