b/w D and E, D for me. E has a confusing 'it' - dont know if it would refer to star or mass.

A shows that stage is depending on mass.
C and E - 'it' refers to mass.
I choose D.

(Why did we reject B? Is it because 'it' may refer to stage?)

Has to be D. In E apart from it the mass of the star after passing....is incorrect. Mass cannot pass.

Good one, I think B got to be the answer

A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.

--Here depending on mass is dangling

(B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

- Consise and expresses the idea clearly

(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a starâ€™s mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

- Incorrectly states that mass is what compresses to neutron star. Mass is just an attribute of star. Wrong comparison

(D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
--- misplaced modifier, again implies as though mass is passing through red giant state

(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

-same reason as D

I wouldn't mess with B. it is more correct than the rest of the answer choices
