IMO (D) is best, rest all have misplaced modifier.

I think this Q was discussed earlier also. But I don't have the link!!

I also think it's D. Even though it's not a guess on my part, I don't think I can explain this choice clearly.

Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole

What is in red is a parenthetical element. It is non-essential information which can be removed. Read the rest and you can see that the sentence is very clear and concise.

B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole

"its" refers to the red giant stage's mass? "its" should refer to the star's mass.

D is the OA. Thanks everyone for helping me on this. Paul - thanks for your explanation. actually i by default assumed that the 'its' refers to the star. I ought to be very careful.
