It is actually D. Take out the dependent clause and it reads fine.

B has a modifier issue. I am not sure if we can call the depending on its mass a dependent clause and say there is no modifier issue. If you ask the Q who after passing through X, it refers to depending on its mass and not the star.

OA is D.

I actually chose B as well but after further review, I realized "its" in the dependent clause can refer to the stage or the star.

B) depending on its mass
C) a star’s mass will determine
E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine

So D is the Right choice for me!

It can't be E. E makes it sounds like the mass of the star goes through the stage. Mass is not the subject, star is. E changes the meaning of the sentence.
