A study by a group of dentists has concluded that regular use of a certain brand of mouthwash is as effective as flossing in preventing gum disease. The mouthwash comapny has released a television ad suggesting that people who do not like flossing can now rely solely on mouthwash and brushing to maintain good dental health.A leading manufacturer of dental floss brought a lawsuit against the mouthwash comapny demanding that the adv be discontinued on the grounds that it is misleading.

which of the following , if true provides the strongest support for the dental floss company's claim that the adv is misleading?

a) the dental floss manufacturer is concerned that it will lose market share in the dental market health because the adv encourages ppl to switch from dental floss to mouthwash.

b)the dental floss company claims in its own adv that brushing and flossing after every meal is the most effective way to maintain good heath.

c)although mouthwash is an effective deterrent to gum disease,it is less effective than dental floss at removing plaque and preventing cavities between teeth.

d) per usage, mouthwash is 3 times more expensive than dental floss, if the recommended amounts of both products are used.

e)the dentists who conducted the study on the effectiveness of mouthwash in preventing gum disease obtained their funding for the study from a comapny that manufactures mouthwash.

Am confused between c) and e)

Hi
IMO it should be C.
We need to present a fact that makes the conclusion more realistic.
Misleading means it is presenting a wrong info to the viewers. Check option E: It just provides info about the funding of the mouthwash scientist's , it does not says anything about why the adv. is misleading. It speculates that since the scientists received funding from mouthwash company , so they must be presenting incorrect data. But we need the incorrect data not that why the scientist presented that incorrect data.

[quote="ruplun"]A study by a group of dentists has concluded that regular use of a certain brand of mouthwash is as effective as flossing in preventing gum disease. The mouthwash company has released a television ad suggesting that people who do not like flossing can now rely solely on mouthwash and brushing to maintain good dental health.A leading manufacturer of dental floss brought a lawsuit against the mouthwash comapny demanding that the adv be discontinued on the grounds that it is misleading.

Focus on the highlighted portion (In Red). Advertisement says that Relying solely on flossing & brushing will help maintain good dental health. Prevention of Gum disease is one of the ways of maintaining good dental health; there are other factors that can determine good Dental Health Such as those mentioned in Option C. The argument shifts from Specific detail to General Detail, assuming that it is the only factor determining good dental health. Thus, the advertisement is misleading and Option C provides support to the conclusion.

Incorrect data and extra data both not in the topic. So why choose c over e?

On strengthen weaken question ..there is no problem to select an answer that has etre info, but yes incorrect info..cannot be the part of the correct answer. Extra info must be part of answers to strengthen weaken questions.

IMO c... Even i was confused between c and e; and chose E... but later i realized that E is wrong because it is not stated that Dentist manipulated the data. It is in our mind, based on real life examples, that ppl normally try to help the main benefactor.

Request you to not to post answers/queries/views in question window. This prevents us to analyze the question. The whole purpose of GMAT Club forums is wasted doing so.
