Well wanted to post the explanation but gurpreet's post says it all and is enough to understand that it's a parallelism and verb/tense agreement problem.
Kudos for gurpreet

IMO E for the below reasons.

A/B. 'exercise' and 'associated' are not parallel
C. 'exercise and associate' are simple present and 'required' is not parallel. Past tense is not correct.
D. 'exercise and associate' are simple present and 'have required' is not parallel. Perfect tense is not required.
E. 'exercise and associate' and 'require' are parallel.

the important thing we learn from this question is that when the main clause is in past tense, the dependent clause normally in the past tense but can be in the present tense.

without knowing that independent clause can be in the present tense, we still can go to the correct answer.

but in many high level og problem above knowledge is tested .

beautiful question

Let's understand the meaning of the sentence. It talks about some facts, using if-then to present conditions.

A study
commissioned by the Department of Agriculture (noun modifier that modifies a study)
(this is the verb for a study) showed that
(new clause->if-then situation) if calves exercise and associated with other calves,
(then clause) they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do those raised in confinement.

Error analysis:
we have 2 verbs not parallel to each other exercise and associated. Both verbs must be in present simple, because then clause has "will require" verb, which is as well incorrect to present facts.
Comparison error -> X gain quicker than Y. X and Y are not parallel.
Future simple used to present general fact.

(A) associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do
(B) associated with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight quicker than
(C) associate with other calves, they required less medication and will gain weight quicker than do
(D) associate with other calves, they have required less medication and will gain weight more quickly than do
(E) associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than

exercise - so it should be associate

C, D and E.

E follows correct tense sequence.

Also, since we have less medication, more quickly is preferred over quicker.

A study commissioned by the Department of Agriculture showed that if calves exercise and associate with other calves , they (calves) require less medication and gain weight more quickly than those (other calves) raised in confinement.

IMHO (D) for the highlighted errors in the options...

Hi Abhishek009,

Is that a typo? Going by the coloring, I think you meant option E?

Also, in D, have required and will gain weight seems odd.

The verb should be in present tense and it maintains parallelism .

sananoor, the word "do" is not wrong. It just isn't needed to make the meaning clear.

Let's contrast it to another case:

I like pie more than my wife.

In this case, we have definite ambiguity: Do I actually prefer pie to my wife or do I simply like pie more than she does? We can save my marriage by adding "does"!

However, there's no ambiguity in the calves sentence. We can't read it to mean "They require less medication than they require those raised in confinement." Therefore, the comparison is clear without "do."
