"but that" is fine here. read the sentence as:

The study showed that (....) but that (....).

Ans-D..but i took 3:18 as i couldn't understand the meaning of the sentence properly even though i eliminated A,B,C for lack of 'that' after parallelism marker 'BUT' and option E as "when children has parents" seemed awkward in quick time..Just wanted to make sure i hit the right button :D

Parallelism always reigns supreme on the GMAT!!

D it is...This is a really well written question-- mainly because it seems harder that it really is!....

Simplifying,

Study showed that (1 fact) but that (2nd fact)

When there is study, survey involved, wriiten fact etc involved, always look for that.

This brings us down to D and E.

E uses 'they' in wrong place.

So D it is.

Ans - 'D'

'But' seems to introduce ||ism therefore '..study..showed .. that ... but .. that..'. This eleminates A, B, and C.

'E' is suggest that 'when children had parents' as if children may not have parents as well :-)

Timing - 1.59 Mins :-) (Took a lil more to confirm D)
