A study of 30 patients suffering from severe manic behavior found that their symptoms were relieved after 24 hours of sleep deprivation. Despite the promising results, scientists have not urged the widespread use of sleep deprivation, even though other forms of treatment for manic behavior, such as drugs, have debilitating side effects.

Which of the following, if true, would most effectively explain why sleep deprivation is not used to control mania?

A. A small number of patients who are sleep deprived suffer from difficulty concentrating and keeping focus.
B. Many manic patients have difficulty going more than 24 hours without sleep.
C. Scientists have not been able to identify the exact biochemical connection between sleep deprivation and reduction in symptoms of mania.
D. The drugs used for treatment of mania are very inexpensive.
E. Mania will return once the patient sleeps again for even a few minutes without any reduction in symptoms.
