OA is E. Please explain why? I go with C

C is wrong because it conveys that the madagascar periwinkle derivative itself is cultivated. Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated, not its derivative

The Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care but not the The derivative of periwinkle .
In "C" the meaning goes as follow :

The derivative of Madagascar periwinkle is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care.

Which is why the same option is ruled out [:)] ..

The answer should be "E" ..hope this will help.

First of all start from what is un-underlined. What is cultivated? Obliviously a plant, not its derivative nor a substance derived from the plant. This takes us straight to Choice E. Choice D, as such will have two verbs for a single subject and hence is a run-on and wrong. Does it help?

Straight E.

Option A - A substance derived from X is cultivated in Y - Nonsensical construction
Option B - A derivative of X is cultivated in Y - Nonsensical construction
Option C - A [Adj.][Adj.] derivative is cultivated in Y - Nonsensical construction
Option D- Incorrect use of Present Perfect tense.
Option E - Madagascar Periwinkle cultivated in Y - Correct sensible construction.

Look at the non-underlined part for clues:

,_______________ is cultivated in China as part => From this usage it is clear that we need a subject for the action verb "is cultivated "(what is cultivated) . Definitely the substance is not cultivated, neither is the derivative cultivated => A, B and C out. D is just absurd as that is used to modify patients ...

E is the obvious winner.

If there were no "is" in the original sentence, the usage would be correct

The substance derived from grass cultivated in china => here cultivated in china is modifying the noun (grass).

But you cannot say,

The substance derived from grass is cultivated in china => Incorrect. This says "The substance derived from grass" is actually cultivated => something that is absolutely absurd. The substance is not cultivated, the grass is cultivated.

A simple way to look at this question is to ask:
What is cultivated in China?
Possible answer:
1) Periwinkle
2) Substance
Logical answer is Periwinkle.

I still don't like the question because there is some ambiguity. For example: Marijuana is a substance and Marijuana can be cultivated. Although the actual drug is a derivative of the plant, or so you can argue.

I dont think its the case
the usage
derivative for
derivative--> noun
derivative to
etc are also correct; it is just dependent on the context of the sentence.

In this case, other issues are prominent enough to nullify the case of idiomatic construction.

Derivative cannot be grown directly ... ofcourse it is the Madagascar periwinkle which is grown and not its derivative so The Madagascar periwinkle will be the subject - ANS : E

The original sentence sounds like the derivative itself is cultivated in China! ruling out E, which changes the intended meaning!

The best suitable option is C according to me.
Though C is also wrong because it uses ",which " that makes the modifier non essential but it is supposeto be essential.

OA is E in which a derivative modifies The madgascar periwinkle which is wrong

Please clarify these doubts.

Hi Shikhar-

Why don't we break the answer choices one by one and then zero-in on the best choice?

Lets come to option A- If you see the words marked in red- We cannot make out what these words are modifying (ambiguous)
Now option B- Just by looking at it you know the construction is wrong
Option D- The use of that is ambigous here.
Otion C- The thumb rule is 'which' must refer to the noun preceding the comma. In this case it looks ambigous
Option E- This fits best and also the sentence is more meaningful when compared to option C

This sentence talks about something that is cultivated in China. We have two object here: Madagascar periwinkle and substance. Thus, Only Madagascar periwinkle can be cultivated --> A, B & C are eliminated.
D is wrong because of "that".
E is precise and correct: "a derivative of which..." correctly modifies "the Madagascar periwinkle".
