A team of three sales professionals, X, Y , and Z, divided a $35,000 commission amongst themselves. How much did Z receive?

(1) The ratio of the amount Z received to the amount that X and Y received was 2 : 5.
(2) The ratio of the amount X received to the amount that Y and Z received was 3 : 4.


Relatively easy question and even though I got the correct answer, I want to double check

Statement 1

2x+5x = 35000

7 x = 35000

x = 5000

Z received 10000. But my question is am I right in doing this way as the questions says the commission is divided between the 3.

Statement 2 is insufficient.

Yes, your solution for (1) is correct. You could solve in another way too:

A team of three sales professionals, X, Y , and Z, divided a $35,000 commission amongst themselves. How much did Z receive?

(1) The ratio of the amount Z received to the amount that X and Y received was 2 : 5 --> the ratio of the amount Z received to the TOTAL amount in 2/(2+5)=2/7 --> Z received 2/7*$35,000=$10,000. Sufficient.

(2) The ratio of the amount X received to the amount that Y and Z received was 3 : 4 --> the similar way we can say that Y and Z together received 4/(3+4)=4/7th of the total amount, so 4/7*$35,000=$20,000, but we don't know how much from this amount was Z's share. Not sufficient.

Answer: A.

Only thing I would add is that reason why 2 is insufficient is that you cannot tell how much goes to Y vs Z....

I know that was implied in your answer but figured I would put it in writing..
