Le'ts assign a nice value to the starting profit (in 2001)
Let's say $100 = profit in 2001

A trader’s profit in 2002 was 20 percent greater than its profit in 2001
So, the 2002 profit = 20% more than the 2001 profit
= $120

Profit in 2003 was 25 percent greater than its profit in 2002
So, the 2003 profit = 25% more than the 2002 profit
= $150

The company’s profit in 2003 was what percent greater than its profit in 2001?
In other words, $150 is what percent greater than $100?
$150 is 50% greater than $100

Answer: E

Let P=Profit in 2001
2002 Profit=1.2P
2003 Profit=1.2P*1.25=1.5P
(1.5P-P)/P=50%

We can let the profit in 2001 = n; thus, the profit in 2003, in terms of n, is:

n x 1.2 x 1.25 = 1.5n

We see that the percent increase was 50%.

Answer: E
