A trader’s profit in 2002 was 20 percent greater than its profit in 2001, and its profit in 2003 was 25 percent greater than its profit in 2002. The company’s profit in 2003 was what percent greater than its profit in 2001?

(A) 5%
(B) 45%
(C) 46%
(D) 48%
(E) 50%

We can let the profit in 2001 = n; thus, the profit in 2003, in terms of n, is:

n x 1.2 x 1.25 = 1.5n

We see that the percent increase was 50%.
