A train traveled from station X to station Y at a constant speed of 88 feet per second. Is the distance that the train traveled from station X to station Y greater than 40 miles? (1 mile = 5,280 feet)

(1) It took less than 45 minutes for the train to travel from station X to station Y
(2) It took more than 42 minutes for the train to travel from station X to station Y

(A)Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
(B)Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
(C)BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
(D)EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
(E)Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

This seems easy to me.....picked D.....views????

I get B.

Rate is 88ft per sec. Rate is also 5280 ft per min. or 1 mile per min.

S1: less than 45 min. train could have traveled 2min or 44min insuff.

S2: traveled more than 42min. Well lets just take the xtreme that it traveled 42 min.

We can see that since the train travels 1 mile in 1 minute that 42minutes will equal 42miles. More than 40.

Suff.

Speed of train = 88 feet per second = 1/60 mile per second = 1 mile/min

St1:
Since it took less than 45 minutes, there is a possiblity the distance is greater than 40 miles, or less than 40 miles. Insufficient.

St2:
Since it took more than 42 minutes, the distance is definitely greater than 40 miles. Sufficient..

Should be B . If you calculate time taken for 40 miles it comes to 40 mins
We we know if train took more 42 mins it surely would have travelled greater than 40 miles. So B is sufficient.

A doesnt help because it says it tool less than 45 minutes . In that case if train travelled 43 mins it travelled more than 40 miles . But if it look 30 mins , it travelled les than 40 miles . So A is inconclusive.

find out how long it will take for train to travel 40 miles, convert miles to feet so 40*5280=88*T-----> T=2400 so it is 2400 secounds

then.
1. 45*60=2700
2. 42*60=2520

this is not a proper way of solving it,
i think i would go with E
