I think the first is a conclusion, but not the author's, it's the conclusion of a proponent of "fast gaining popular opinion" The argument as a whole tries to oppose the conclusion above and at the and the author gives his conclusion: "Clearly, those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink." This is my reasoning let's see the answer options
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. The first is not the main conclusion per my reasoning above. Wrong
B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. Thats good, according to my reasoning, we can call the "second" a consideration C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. the second is not the conclusion
D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. The first is a conclusion, not main but anyway a conclusion The second is not evidence, it is a prediction
E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. The first does not support the main conclusion. wrong
IMO Ans: B

By rephrasing the passage, it can be divided into: A common belief or idea: "international coaches emphasizing on technique and relying on a strict training regimen are overdoing their job" consideration/reason for the common belief: the professional sportsmen lack neither the skill nor the expertise conclusion on the common belief: the role of a coach must be more of a people manager and a facilitator --> boldface 1 consideration/reason (1) against the common belief: no sportsperson is flawless in technique ... consideration/reason (2) against the common belief: lack of technical advancements may outmode tomorrow, a competitive sportsperson today --> boldface 2 Author's main conclusion: those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink
from the above understanding, the first boldface is not the main conclusion (A) or a support for it (E). Besides, it is not used to oppose the main conclusion (D), but the other way around is. In other words, it is opposed by the main conclusion of the author (B,C). the second bold face is not opposing the main conclusion (A) and is not the main conclusion (C), but is a consideration (not an evidence D ) that supports the main conclusion (B,E)
Only B represented both boldfaces correctly

Main conclusion of the argument is "those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink."
BF1 is a intermediate conclusion but goes against the main conclusion. BF2 is a strong openion in support of the main conclusion.
Matching these two findings, option B is the correct statement.
The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument.

A view fast gaining popularity is that international coaches emphasizing on technique and relying on a strict training regimen are overdoing their job. After all, at the highest level, the professional sportsmen lack neither the skill nor the expertise to perform; therefore, the role of a coach must be more of a people manager and a facilitator. A crucial aspect such proponents miss is that no sportsperson, however skilled, is flawless in technique and letting such lacuna aggravate is bound to have serious repercussions; furthermore, given the highly dynamic and competitive nature of the modern day sport, lack of technical advancements may outmode tomorrow, a competitive sportsperson today. Clearly, those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink.
Counter Premise:
-The role of a coach must be more of a people manager
Premises:
-Flawless in technique and letting such lacuna aggravate is bound to have serious repercussions -Given the highly dynamic and competitive nature of the modern day sport, lack of technical advancements may outmode tomorrow, a competitive sportsperson today.
Conclusion
-Those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink.
In the argument above, the portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. -This one is the only one that matches our previous analysis C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument.
(B) is our answer

All the other information given is either supporting the intermediate conclusion or the main conclusion as mentioned above. Let us check the options now.
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. --> Wrong. The first is the intermediate conclusion and not the main conclusion.

Here the first part is correctly identified as an intermediate conclusion and the second as additional data to support the main conclusion which follows in the argument.

In the argument above, the portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
Lets summarize: Last sentence provides position of an author: popular view that a first of all a coach must be a people manager/facilitator should be reconsidered. And there is concrete reason for such reconsideration: letting such lacuna aggravate is bound to have serious repercussions; Moreover, lack of technical advancements may outmode tomorrow, a competitive sportsperson today.
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. - as we saw, the main conclusion of the passage is that the view should be rethought, therefore out right away B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. this is inline with our own brief summary: we seek to oppose the view by stating the consideration such as technique outdoing a sportman C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. could be the answer, however, as stated, the second is not conclusion. Conclusion is that the view must be reconsidered D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. so this option switches the consideration and the conclusion vice-verca. We are opposing the first boldface statement, but not the statment opposes the conclusion E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. the main conclusion of the arguent calls to oppose the first boldface statement, therefore this option is out

People believe: that coaches are overdoing their job by emphasizing on technique and relying on strict training. and that they should not do that, because, professional players already have skills and expertise to perform. so role of coach should be of only facilitating and people management. Author: The above people are missing a certain aspect. However skilled these players are, no player is without flaw in technique. this will lead to higher negative impact. additionally, given the competitiveness of today's sport, and lack of technical advancements that can disadvantage the player , we must re-think about having softer coaches who may not helpful.
What is the conclusion of the argument = eventually author is suggesting people to re-think their view towards the role of coach.
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. Now if we are considering stmt1 to be the main conclusion of the argument, it means we are not considering author's view. hence, any answer choice that suggests stmt 1 is an main conclusion is incorrect.
B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. stmt 1 is the intermediation or conclusion from common belief that argument is opposing. stmt 2 is not the conclusion as we found the conclusion above different, however, stmt 2 is helping to form authors conclusion. so i could say this is true, keep the answer.
C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. stmt 1 is the intermediation or conclusion from common belief that argument is opposing. stmt 2 is not the conclusion as we found the conclusion above different.
D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. stmt 1 is the conclusion of people's view , it is not being used to oppose anything. it is used to present the argument.
E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. stmt 1 is the intermediation or conclusion from common belief that argument is opposing. it is not author's eventual conclusion
so far B is the best answer!

In the argument above, the portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. Incorrect. The first is not the main conclusion of the passage B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. Correct. The first is a conclusion of the proponent of softer coaching and the argument seeks to oppose that. The second is a consideration (the keyword here in the second BF that makes it a consideration as opposed to an evidence is the word "may") in support of the main conclusion. C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. Incorrect. The second is not the main conclusion. D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. Incorrect. The first is not a consideration, but a conclusion. E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. Incorrect. First is not used to support the main conclusion.

The author starts with a popular view and ends with what the view believes in – “the role of a coach must be more of a people manager and a facilitator” – This can be considered as the conclusion of the proponents of the popular view. The author then starts stating why he feels that the popular view is not correct. He provides supportive statements to put down his conclusion that “those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink”. Now the boldface “lack of technical advancements may outmode tomorrow, a competitive sportsperson today” is supporting the author’s conclusion i.e. the main conclusion of the argument.
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. The first is not the main conclusion. Eliminate.
B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. The first is the proponent’s conclusion and the author’s argument is indeed opposing that. The second is indeed a consideration that supports the author’s conclusion. Hold.
C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. The first is the proponent’s conclusion and the author’s argument is indeed opposing that. The second is not the main conclusion; it is supporting the main conclusion. Eliminate.
D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. The first can be considered as a consideration that opposes the main conclusion. Looks good until here. The second is certainly not evidence. The author is not presenting an example to support the main conclusion. Eliminate.
E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. The first does not support the main conclusion. Eliminate.

In the argument above, the portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
Understanding of Argument: Boldface one- States the conclusion. That Coach for highest level sports person should work as people manager and Facilitators. Because those sportsman have all skills and techniques as they are at highest level.
Boldface two- Is Premise that supports main conclusion.
Main Conclusion:"Clearly, those arguing for softer coaching at the highest level must rethink."
A. The first is the main conclusion of the passage; the second opposes that conclusion. - First is not main conclusion .So eliminate A B. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. - Correct matches our understanding of Argument.
C. The first is a conclusion that the argument seeks to oppose; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. - First part is correct but second is NOT main conclusion. So Eliminate B
D. The first is a consideration that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is evidence presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. - First is not a consideration so eliminate D
E. The first has been used to support the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a consideration presented to support the main conclusion of the argument. - First is clearly not supporting the main conclusion of the argument . Infact it is opposite to it. So Eliminate E
ANS- Choice B is CORRECT
