For me it should be A

We test drove a car- Past tense. And at that time it was having engine trouble and not it had engine trouble before we tes drove it.

It will be interesting to know the real answer.

I would think both are ok depending on the context of the sentence.

You use an ing modifier when you want to modify the whole object and not only the word preceded by the relative pronoun, in which case, you use that or which. No?

I don't like either of them.

A is almost vague to the point that it could be interpreted as the driver having engine trouble and not the car.

B does it still have engine trouble? or was that before you test drove it?

maybe a hybrid along the lines of...

We test-drove a car that was having engine trouble?

I think that both could be right even though the second is preferable.

ill go with B because that is an essential modifier that adds info that is necessary to the sentence. Im not sure why A is wrong.
