A wooden rod is cut into two pieces. What is the length of the longer piece?

Let the length of the shorter and longer pieces be x and y, respectively.

(1) One of the pieces is 20 inches longer than the other piece --> x + 20 = y. Not sufficient.

(2) The length of the shorter piece is $$\frac{1}{3}$$ the length of the longer piece --> x = y/3. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) We have two distinct linear equations with two unknowns, hence we can solve for both. Sufficient.

A wooden rod is cut into two pieces. What is the length of the longer piece?
=> Longer piece = L
shorter piece = S

(1) One of the pieces is 20 inches longer than the other piece.
L = S+20 inch
as we don't know full length of wooden rod. => we don't know S to calculate L
Insufficient

(2) The length of the shorter piece is 1/3 the length of the longer piece
S= L/3
as we don't know full length of wooden rod. => we don't know S to calculate L
Insufficient

1+2
L = S+20 and L=S= L/3
=> L= L/3 +20 => 2L/3 = 20 => L = 30
Sufficient

Statement 1 gives you the lengths with a variable: x and x+20. With statement 2 you can join them and find X. So letter C.
