Hi....

Let the time taken be x while going and therefore$$\frac{x}{2}$$ on return trip.
So total time =x+x/2=3x/2..
Distance=1+1=2..
So average speed=2/(3x/2)=4/3x..
So 4/3x=2/3....x=2

Now on the way to beach side..
D=1
Time taken =2 HR
So speed = 1/2

We can let the time from Downtown to Beachside = t, and thus the time from Beachside to Downtown = t/2.

Since the average speed was ⅔, we have:

average speed = (total distance)/(total time)

2/3 = (1 + 1)/(t + t/2)

2/3 = 2/(3t/2)

3t = 6

t = 2

Since it takes 2 hours to go from Downtown to Beachside, a distance of 1 mile, the speed is 1/2 mph.
