According to scientists, people are genetically more similar to their friends than strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing them an evolutionary advantage for befriending those with different immunities.

A. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing

B. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease and provides

C. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease to provide

D. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing

E. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reducing the spread of disease provides

.Because of parallelism(error of that) we can eliminate E and A. Now we are left with B,C,D. In D providing clearly modifies the sentence before. Hence ans is D.

B. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease and provides - meaning error, as the difference does not provide the advantage, the difference reducing the spread of disease does

A. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing --> "what is much more interesting to know" is singular

B. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease and provides --> providing is the result of "this difference reduces the spread of disease", this two aren't parallel

C. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease to provide --> same as A

D. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing --> correct

E. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reducing the spread of disease provides --> "that the genes are different". & "that this difference reduces" aren't parallel, missing that from "this difference reduces", providing is the result of "this difference reduces the spread of disease", provides is not direct action of "this difference"

A. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing-there has to be a 'to' before the word strangers it creates the error of double meaning ,parallelism & a subject verb disagreement. what is much more interesting to know must be followed by singular verb as the subject is singular

B. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease and provides-This sentence corrects the 'to' which needed to be before the word strangers. However, this one introduces a new error of meaning, as per this sentence, the difference performs to actions, provision and reduction. . this sentence however corrects the sub-verb agreement error we found in option A

C. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease to provide- Repeats the subject verb disagreement error we found in sentence A, This sentence also changes the meaning of the sentence by introducing to provide

D. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing- providing is a modifier here which is incorrect

E. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reducing the spread of disease provides- Makes perfect sense and conveys proper meaning

What's the antecedent of "them" in D?
What does the "providing them an evolutionary....." part modify here?

D. According to scientists, people are genetically more similar to their friends than to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing them an evolutionary advantage for befriending those with different immunities.

Two much more interesting facts:
(1) the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends
(2) this difference (the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends) reduces the spread of disease.
I think COMMA+VERBing Modifier states the HOW issue.

How this difference reduces the spread of disease: because this difference provides THEM (the genes that control immunity to certain diseases) an evolutionary advantage for befriending those (the genes) with different immunities.

Dear experts, please correct my reasoning.

1. strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know are that the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing- subject verb error, we are saying what is and then we are using are- wrong

2. to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease and provides- The reduce in the spread of the disease provides them an advantage, not the difference

3. Error same as in A

4. Correct

5. Error same as in B

Split 1: 'strangers;' v/s 'to strangers'
'to strangers' is parallel to 'similar to their friends'
Options A and C are out.

Split 2: 'provides' v/s 'providing'
'Providing' is correct here since it lends a cause and effect relationship and preserves the intent of the original sentence.

Option D is correct.

So, the correct choice D is here again:
Quote:
According to scientists, people are genetically more similar to their friends than to strangers of the same population, but what is much more interesting to know is that the genes that control immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and that this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing them an evolutionary advantage for befriending those with different immunities.

So, what's the cause and effect here?
That is:
this difference reduces the spread of disease, providing them an evolutionary advantage for befriending those with different immunities.

Question to egmat
How did you use them as a pronoun though it does not have any antecedent in the cause-effect part?
this is a pronoun, so it definitely should have a NOUN entity. What's the noun of this (better if you be specific in selecting NOUN)?
Thanks__

What's the antecedent of "them" in D?
What does the "providing them an evolutionary....." part modify here?

"them" refers to "friends"
"providing them an evolutionary advantage ... " is a modifier modifying the entire previous clause. Check the usage of participles here: https://www.veritasprep.com//blog/2014/ ... -the-gmat/

Error analysis

WRONG- People are genetically more similar to their friends than strangers
This sentence means that people are more similar to their friends than strangers are to their friends. Not what the author wants to convey here
RIGHT- People are genetically more similar to their friends than TO STRANGERS (and no strangers)
This very clearly shows the intended meaning. People are more similar TO their friends than people are TO strangers
This eliminates A and C

THAT and THAT parallelism
but what is much more interesting to know is THAT the genes controlling immunity to certain diseases are different between friends, and THAT this difference....
This eliminates E

+ing form required in the end
"and provided" means that the difference provides.... which is wrong here
"The difference reduces the spread of disease" - CAUSE
", providing ...." - Effect
"providing" is required which will modify the entire preceding sentence
This eliminates B

D is our winner

Hope this helps

Going by POE:

Errors spotted:
Comparison ambiguity - "people" with "strangers" or "friends" with "strangers"? - Eliminate A and C

B- Misses showing that the second action is a result of the first action. A comma + verb-ing would be preferred to show the result.

D- fixes all the errors.

E- changes meaning in the second part.

Answer D
