A looks fine.

It is the depression that could strain...

D and E seem to indicate that Its Japan that could strain ...

C is a run-on

B is mess...

A looks ok. all other choices have one or more flaws....

This is a straight A!

Plunging into depression with double.....is wrong! That eliminates C D and E!
Depression and double digit unemployment does not occur together! Depression is the cause and unemployment is the effect!

Depression is not caused by the double digit unemployment - So B is wrong!
