(A) doubling those reported in the 1977 survey
- particple 'doubling' suggests an action that is still taking place

(B) to double the number the 1977 survey reported
- 'to double' is wrong

(C) twice those the 1977 survey reported
- pronoun 'those' is wrong

(D) twice as much as those reported in the 1977 survey
- 'those' is not clear what it modifies

(E) twice the number reported in the 1977 survey
- I'll take E. The number could refer to the percentage figures.

E too but C was a potential choice for me, I just chose E because E sounds better and seems to have a better grammar structure...however can someone explain why C is incorrect ? because of "those" ?
