Accounting PhD GMAT score needed?

Accounting PhD GMAT score needed? [#permalink] New post   22 Jan 2010, 01:56
This might be in other threads, but i havent seen this one in a while. I know like 650-680 is the magic number for a masters program but what is the magic numbers needed for an accounting phd, or at least the number that you need consideration. I have a 740 but my Math component is only a 47 (78%?)? Should I retake, if I decide i want to do a phd for 2012 admissions?

Side note: Do i need like multivariable calc, linear algebra, and differential equaitions for an accountng phd?

I have few questions and I would appreciate if anyone have knowledgeable answer to them.

1. How important is the Masters Degree for PhD program applicants?
2. If I have a choice, should I continue working in public accounting for a couple of years to get real life experience, or should I go for MS in Accounting? Which one has a more weight on your application for the PhD programs?
3. The highest level math and stat classes I have taken are calc II and calc based stat. Should I consider taking at least linear algebra and differential equations before applying to PhD programs?

3) Dont think the accounting programs are math intensive... sad but true... your background in math should suffice.

Again, as others have said, most of these answers depend on the program you are trying to get in. In general though work experience will always trump a MS/PHD in accounting for 99.99% of the jobs.

My ultimate career goal is teaching. I have just graduated with my undergraduate degree in accounting and started working in public accounting. I will be taking all four parts of CPA exam this summer.

Although I won't apply for any schools for another couple of years, I want to know what would be the best path to graduate school.

At this moment I am interested in school that "produce" great teachers, and research is on the second place. Reading other threads, I found out that some schools are in research, while others in teaching.

What type of school, Wharton or Cal State Northridge? 600 is enough at many lower-tier places while 750 along won't guarantee a spot in Chicago. In my mind, 740 should be fine for many good schools, but I don't know whether everybody looks at the quant/verbal split. It may depend on your background.

On your side note -- you don't absolutely 'need' all that stuff but I'd strongly recommend them, especially linear algebra.

Dear All,

I would like to ask whether you guys have an average GMAT score lists for the universities in US (of course not all schools)

Second, I saw some schools post the average score. Actually, how do I interpret this score?

For example, duke has 706 or 710 for mean. Should I think that I must get 690-710

Because I just got 660 on GMAT, 50 differences, is my score too bad for duke's PhD?

700+ on GMAT, relevant undergraduate background and work experience should get you into most programs.

I think you are far too young to get the full benefit of the Phd... take the CPA exam... get some experience under your belt... see what you like and what you dont like in accounting. After 5 years of experience you will have a good grasp of where you stand. Only then consider a Phd ... a great teacher is one who can relate real life experiences with theory... and as we all well know accounting theory is dry... it becomes exciting when a teacher show us how it is applied in the workplace.
