'E' it should be.

A, B, C - Wrong modifier.
D - Changes meaning, wrong comparison.

Yes, it is E. The leading figure in the Scottish enlightenment is Adam Smith, not his two books.

A,B and C have modifier problem. A leading figure in the Scottish enlightenment is modifying Adam Smith's two major books

X is to Y what A is to B is perfect.
