Use of subjunctive form. 'Adolescence' is singular. So we go with D.

if it is singular,how can we go with "were". i thought "were" is for plural and "was" is for singular. Isnt it so?

'Were' is not plural. It is not related to the countable/non-countable theory.

For eg: If I were a rich man,.....

oh ok,i get it. As its subjunctive case, we use "were" . Thanks .. Kudos!!

If past tense ,then condition tense construction
+ agreement issue..
