C gerund does the job. Paul why do you think B. Indeed it is concise but doesn't it alter the meaning that they are treating themselves instead of some doc or pscho?

I am getting it as C.

symptoms hae to get recognized and treated. Thus, B and D are ruled out in the first pass. E is ruled out because of 'his or her' which should be 'their'. 'chance of' is idiomatic and concise. So, I choose C.

Do correct me if my analysis is wrong.
