Please clarify Why D is wrong. Is "appears that it has" wrong?

am confused here, what is wrong with D, I think D grammatically is right. "Appear that" is an idiom too, none of you provided an explanation why it is wrong.
??????? I think am missing something here

"appears that" is normally used after "it".
For example: It appears that he has done well in the exam.

It is awkward to say: He appears that he has done well in the exam.
"He appears to have done well in the exam" sounds better.

Remove the modifiers and look at the structure of the sentence.

... the semiconductor industry ... appears that ...
is unidiomatic.[/quote]

VeritasPrepKarishma, GMATNinja ,

I am afraid I haven't gotten the point.
Would you please explain further ?

Thanks in advance
Have a lovely day

(A) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears to have
Best among the options

(B) computers, spy satellites, and dishwashers, appears having
Needs “from..to”; not a complete sentence – “the nation’s semiconductor industry…appears having made a long-awaited recovery (for what?)”

(C) computers, spy satellites, and dishwashers, appears that it has
Needs “from..to”; “the nation’s semiconductor industry…appears that it [the nation’s semiconductor industry] has made a long-awaited recovery.” – nonsensical

(D) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears that it has
“the nation’s semiconductor industry…appears that it [the nation’s semiconductor industry] has made a long-awaited recovery.” – nonsensical

(E) computers and spy satellites as well as dishwashers, appears to have
Needs “from..to”

Hello Experts,
@VeritasPrepKarishma GMATNinja
(A) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears to have
(D) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears that it has

In A - the industry appear to have made a recovery - The recovery action happened in the past whereas in D recovery started in the past and still continuing.
So how can we eliminate D using tense?

Thanks!

Hi Sneha, we cannot eliminate D, using tenses.

Both A (the correct answer) and D use present perfect tense. The use of present perfect tense in D is not perhaps immediately apparent, since D uses (what's called) a "perfect infinitive" (to have made).

p.s. Our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses perfect infinitive. Have attached the corresponding section of the book, for your reference.

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

(C) computers, spy satellites, and dishwashers, appears that it has

(D) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears that it has

(E) computers and spy satellites as well as dishwashers, appears to have

Meaning is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of this sentence is that the nation’s semiconductor industry makes chips that run everything from computers and spy satellites to dishwashers and appears to have recovered after suffering $2 billion in losses and 25,000 layoffs.

Concepts tested here: Meaning + Idioms

• “from A to B” is an acceptable idiomatic construction; A and B must be comparable and parallel.

A: Correct. This answer choice uses the phrase "appears to have made", conveying the intended meaning - that the nation's semiconductor industry appears to have recovered. Further, Option A uses the correct, idiomatic construction "from A ("computers and spy satellites") to B ("dishwashers").

B: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "appears having"; the construction of this phrase leads to an incoherent meaning; the intended meaning is that the nation's semiconductor industry appears to have recovered. Further, Option B incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "from A ("computers"),B ("spy satellites"), and C ("dishwashers")" rather than the correct construction "from A to B"; please remember, “from A to B” is an acceptable idiomatic construction; A and B must be comparable and parallel.

C: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "appears that it has"; the construction of this phrase leads to an incoherent meaning; the intended meaning is that the nation's semiconductor industry appears to have recovered. Further, Option C incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "from A ("computers"), B ("spy satellites"), and C ("dishwashers")" rather than the correct construction "from A to B"; please remember, “from A to B” is an acceptable idiomatic construction; A and B must be comparable and parallel.

D: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "appears that it has"; the construction of this phrase leads to an incoherent meaning; the intended meaning is that the nation's semiconductor industry appears to have recovered.

E: This answer choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction "from A ("computers and spy satellites") as well as B ("dishwashers") rather than the correct construction "from A to B"; please remember, “from A to B” is an acceptable idiomatic construction; A and B must be comparable and parallel.

Hence, A is the best answer choice.

All the best!

Thank you for your helpful explanation!
For your mention of "Option A uses the correct, idiomatic construction "from A ("computers and spy satellites") to B ("dishwashers")." I do not understand how we can have two nouns in the A element and one noun in the B element. In other words, I have only seen "from computers to dishwashers" in common usage of the idiom.
