Is it A? Since we are defining a timeline, using period here makes sense

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when - date range, so should be during rather than when
B. in which - it is a date range, but it should be during not in
C. during which - yes, this is the right answer, the most succinct
D. when - its a date range, so during rather than when
E. a period during which - during is correct, but too wordy

Time period is 1920 - 1940
Scanning through choices "during" will fit as it is referring the time frame. A nd D are out.

B - modifier issue, "in which" seems to modify only 1940 instead of time period (1920 - 1940)

C - Similar reasoning as B, E is more elegant and clear.

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

The portion a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written. is trying to modify the time period between 1920 and 1940. Answer choices which refer to a specific time cannot convey the right meaning.

A. a period when - INCORRECT
when here tries to refer to a point in time rather than the complete period concerned.

B. in which - INCORRECT
in which doesn't refer to the period.

C. during which - INCORRECT
during is the preposition and should refer to a period as in during this hour or during this era, it needs period definer

D. when - INCORRECT
when should refer to a point in time and there isn't one

E. a period during which - CORRECT
here 'a period during which' clearly refers to the period between 1920 and 1940

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, [a period when] many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when —> incorrect as “when” should refer to a specific point of time.
B. in which —> incorrect as “in which” refers to abstract situations such as condition, situation,... not time
C. during which —> incorrect same as above, besides,
D. when —> incorrect as using when here is ambiguous because we are not sure what year “when” refers to.
E. a period during which —> correct as “which” properly modifies “a period”, which refers to the time between 1920 and 1940.

The difference between choices is so subtle that if we do not go literal and precise about meaning, we will be in trouble. Let's try our best

A. a period when - generally, we use "when" to refer to a specific point of time. In other words Aghata wrote her books at certain specific point and not during 20 years. Not intended meaning. A is gone
B. in which - "which" must refer to noun but there is no noun close by. Thus, this option is wrong
C. during which - again, "which" has to refer to noun, but no none is placed anywhere close by. Wrong
D. when - as in A, when must refer to certain period of time, but meaning wants to convey that Aghata wrote book during 20 years, not at one certain point. Eliminate
E. a period during which - perfect, here we have "which" that refers to period (20 years) and "during" that refers to that period during which she wrote her books. Meaning and grammar are correct here.

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

Last part of the sentence is nonrestrictive clause and refers to the time between 1920 and 1940, which is a PERIOD of TIME, therefore B,C,D are out. We do something DURING period, not WHEN, therefore best answer is E.

A. a period when
B. in which
C. during which
D. when
E. a period during which

A. a period when
when refers to a particular time not the entire duration

during is a preposition we don't use a preposition to describe an action
we need to construct a clause with proper noun and verb

D. when
wrong cant refer to the entire duration

E. a period during which

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

we would need during to be part of the answer to show that something happened simultaneously with an event/action/period of time

Eliminate A, B and B
A. a period when -
B. in which
D. when
–is indicative of a particular moment in time

We have C and E with during, a period during is redundant, eliminate E
E. a period during which- lengthy

C. during which – is indicative of a span of time.

The subordinate clause "a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written" modifies "between 1920 and 1940". Option A is not the most concise choice out the lot. "a period when" is not concise compared to "when", which also express the same idea. B although grammatically correct is not the most concise answer choice. C and E are also not appropriate because they are also not the most concise choice. D is the correct answer because it presents the most concise choice out of the lot.

Agatha Christie wrote some of her best works between 1920 and 1940, a period when many successful light-hearted whodunits were written.

A. a period when - modifying "period" with when is not the best usage. For the moment let's hold this option.
B. in which - "in which" is an incorrect modifier to define the phrase "between 1920 and 1940"
C. during which - seems good. "During which" modifies the time period. Looks better than A.
D. when - usage of "when" is incorrect as "when" can modify a particular moment of time only. But we are talking about a period of time.
E. a period during which - Usage of both "period" and "during which" makes it redundant.

Best choice is (C).
