I know answer should be either B or C, I am not able to differentiate between THAT and THOSE.............Please explain

Thanks for posting this question!

IMO:

In case of comparison

'Those': is a plural form of that.

So if you have:

X of (..) compared with that/those of (..)

singular X needs 'that'
plural X needs 'those'

So, in this case as reference is to plural 'variations', 'those' should be used.

C is correct for using those and of. An insect can not be FROM a specie but can be OF a specie. Those is plural and correctly used with species.
